“People with an Automatic Pattern tend to take a small amount of information and decide immediately based on what they extrapolate. In other words, they hallucinate the rest, then they decide.”
So, as you can see from the example above, Shelle Rose Charvet, the author of Words Words That Change Minds: The 14 Patterns for Mastering the Language of Influence, the author has used various patterns to classify people. Different patterns indicate different personalities and once you decode the communication pattern, you can find out more about the person. Well, everything seems good in theory. However, unless one tries, one cannot verify everything in the book to be true, or just an example of the pattern stated at the very beginning of this review article. I hope you understand my point.
I picked up this book with high expectations. However, the book is more about some LAB Profile the author has developed and her hypotheses. Yes, the language and style of communication that someone uses in conversations can say a lot about the person of concern, but we cannot be certain about it (entirely). The author keeps insisting, in every chapter, that a person can be profiled based on his or her communication, choice of words, selection of voice when articulating ideas and linguistic patterns. That is, if not entirely hallucinating, ridiculous, at the least. Yes, one thing that the author is an expert at is her ability to pitch ideas, sell her products and convince people (almost) that she is able.
“One reason I also wrote, Words That Change Customers’ Mindswas to demonstrate how to work with LAB Profile® Combination Patterns specifically in the sales and service Contexts.”
There are 42 chapters in the book. Most of them either tell something about Lab profile or the methods the author has developed to judge people’s personalities based on language. Nowhere you can find something that convincingly tells you ‘how to master the language of influence’. It is one of those books that tell you lack many things and the author can offer you much (only if you care to follow instructions, download and purchase supportive materials and maybe read the next and previous books).
The book seldom serves the purpose it sells on the front cover. However, it does have many interesting observations to tell the readers. If you are interested in knowing the body of the language (not the body language), you can push through a few chapters. Nevertheless, this or that way, unless you are someone who is doing research on linguistic abilities, you might get done with the book sooner or later.
If you are interested, you can read this book to know more about writing a book. Yes, that is written right. The author has a wonderful style of writing. Shelle Rose Charvet impresses her readers with the style of her written communication that serves very little as far as it’s about mastering the art of influencing by language.
